History of the Restaurant
In 1932, Guild founders Delight and Garfield Merner invited the Palo
Alto Auxiliary to provide lunch service to Allied Arts Guild for the benefit
of the nearby Stanford Home for Convalescent Children. The restaurant's original
tables and chairs were made on the premises by Martin Nelson, the first craftsman/proprietor
of the Guild's wood shop. A friend of the Merners trained the approximately
25 young auxiliary members and set a high standard for correct service. Since
the complex lacked a kitchen, members prepared food in their own homes and brought
it to the Guild to serve. Lunch cost 75 cents; and on the first day, they served
eight guests and earned $6.00! The auxiliary now serves up to 280 guests a day.
We are proud of our 65 years of successful restaurant operation and of the help
it has given to the children in need of medical care. The Stanford Home for
Convalescent Children ultimately became the Lucile Salter Packard Children's
Hospital. The Palo Alto Auxiliary
welcomes new members and invites any woman who is interested in learning how
to become a member to call us at (650) 324-2588.
